Duratron® PBI (Polybenzimidazole)

Duratron® PBI was previously known as Celazole® PBI

Duratron® PBI is the highest performance engineering thermoplastic available today. It offers the highest heat resistance and mechanical property retention over 400°C of any unfilled plastic. It has better wear resistance and load carrying capabilities at extreme temperatures than any other reinforced or unreinforced engineering plastic.

Main properties of our range of Duratron® PBI sheet, rod and tube are:

  • Extremely high maximum allowable service temperature in air (310°C continuously, going up to 500°C for short periods of time)
  • Excellent retention of mechanical strength and stiffness over a wide temperature range
  • Extremely low coefficient of linear thermal expansion
  • Excellent wear & frictional behaviour
  • Inherent low flammability
  • Good electrical insulating and dielectric properties
  • Low outgassing (dry material)
  • High purity in terms of ionic contamination
  • Excellent resistance against high energy radiation (gamma and X-rays)

As an unreinforced material, Duratron® PBI is very “clean” in terms of ionic impurity and it does not outgas (except water). These characteristics make this material very attractive to semiconductor manufacturers for vacuum chamber applications. Duratron® PBI has excellent ultrasonic transparency which makes it an ideal choice for parts such as probe tip lenses in ultrasonic measuring equipment.

Duratron® PBI is also an excellent thermal insulator. Other plastics in melt do not stick to PBI. These characteristics make it ideal for contact seals and insulator bushings in plastic production and moulding equipment.
