The pink blush Perspex acrylic stepping stones in Bridgwater College’s ‘crystal cobweb’ garden at this week’s Chelsea Flower Show have led to a coveted bronze medal for 28 year-old graduate Freya Lawson and her fellow students – and red faces for competing professional designers in the prestigious City Garden category. Perspex was selected as an ideal medium to bring colour and texture to the garden design.
Based on the effect of water when it falls on leaves, the Bridgwater garden design blended timeless nature and contemporary plastics technology to produce a restful urban oasis that any city commuter would find the perfect antidote to a hard day at the office.
CNC cut and profiled from Perspex sheet, the stepping stones and two garden benches coloured in Frosted Blush Pink Perspex were specially made for the students by theplasticshop.co.uk, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of Perspex sheet. An etched top was added to each of the stones to ensure a slip-resistant surface.
The only college to be selected for the City Garden category, Bridgwater saw off entries submitted by several established professional designers to win bronze at only its third ever attempt to take Chelsea honours.
‘We were up against some big, big money,’ said course tutor Michelle Martin. ‘To be one of only six design teams selected to build was an achievement in itself, but to win a medal is even better. The public love the garden. Laurence Lewellyn Bowen (pictured with Diarmuid Gavin) said that if you are going to use pink in the garden then the shade we chose for the stepping stones & seat tops is just the right colour.’
For theplasticshop.co.uk, the response to the students’ design could open up a whole new market for its Perspex range says Director Andy Cole. ‘We were happy to work with the students on their design ideas. Their success is very well deserved, and looks as though it could be good for us too. Chelsea is a major influence for professional and amateur gardeners alike, and we’ve already received positive enquiries from people looking to follow where the Bridgwater team has led.’
